Blessed is he that considereth the poor:
the LORD will deliver him in time of trouble.
The LORD will preserve him, and keep him alive;

Larry King- Nationally Televised Awards Gala Hosted By ESPN's Dan Patrick Will Recognize
King For Demonstrating Long-standing Commitment To Children

March 22, 2003

SALT LAKE CITY, UT (March 12, 2003) Larry King's development of the Larry King Cardiac Foundation in 1988 came about as a result of his desire to heal the hearts of others after his own open-heart surgery the previous year. Since then he has played a major role in saving the lives of children from around the world through his foundation, which seeks out those who cannot afford the life-saving cardiac procedures they need. And for that, Children's Miracle Network announced today it will honor him with the Childrenís Miracle Achievement Award at its third annual event next month in Orlando.

 The Children's Miracle Awards presented by Delta Air Lines, a televised gala hosted by ESPN's Dan Patrick, will take place Saturday, March 22, 2003 (scheduled to air first weekend in June on a syndicated network of 200 stations throughout the United States and Canada).

According to Children's Miracle Network president and CEO, Mick Shannon, King has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to children and has contributed in many ways to bettering the lives of children everywhere. When it comes to doing good for children, talk show host Larry King goes right to the heart of the matter, said Shannon.

Congenital heart disease is the most common of all major birth defects, affecting tens of thousands of newborns each year in the United States.  Kingís foundation works with top childrenís hospitals such as Childrenís National Medical Center and Childrens Hospital Los Angeles to repair life-threatening heart defects for children in need.  The foundation has also partnered with organizations such as the United States Agency for International Development in Benin, West Africa, to bring children with serious heart defects to the United States for specialized cardiac surgery.

Other endeavors that impact the lives of children find voice in King's work as a journalist, where he has bridged difficult topics like depression and suicide, a leading cause of death among children and teens.  For his proactive programming on these topics, King received the American Foundation for Suicide Preventionís Public Service Award.

He has also been involved with the worldwide advocacy efforts of the Save the Children Foundation and the research efforts of the American Heart Association and has been honored with the March of Dimes Franklin Delano Roosevelt Award.
King hosts CNN's Larry King Live, the network's highest rated program.  In his 45 years of broadcasting, he has conducted more than 40,000 interviews, including interviews with every living U.S. president since the Nixon administration.  His honors and awards include the George Foster Peabody Award for Excellence in Broadcasting, a News and Documentary Emmy award, and the Allen H. Neuharth Award for Excellence in Journalism.

Past Delta Miracle Award recipients include Entertainment Tonight's Mary Hart, entertainment exec Roy Disney, actor Edward James Olmos, singer Marilyn McCoo, and sports figures Jackie Joyner Kersey, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Merlin Olsen.

Their mission – to find cures for children with catastrophic illness through research and treatment – is a constant driving force. It is through the pursuit of that mission, that we seize every opportunity to help the children who come to us for care and, in so doing, to create new knowledge that will help children throughout the world.
